Wooden Tray Wall Decor

A couple of weeks ago I found pink wooden trays at Target in their $1 section. I’ve put together a simple vignette on top of my buffet cabinet, and I wanted a wall decor for the background. I had originally wanted an old window, but every one that I would come across was much more than I wanted to spend. When I saw the Target trays, they gave me another idea: Plan B, except not in pink.

I do love the pink color, but it’s not the color I want to go with as my main color for my vignette. Also, pink isn’t exactly a main color I want in my home in general. However, I do like the subtle hint of pink, so you will find it in my home decor here and there.

Alrighty, are you ready to see what I did with the trays?

First thing, I painted the trays. The color I went with is a springy green. About a couple months ago, I had bought a one quart can of this green paint for Susu from Home Depot for a couple of projects that she is working on. It was Susu’s own pick. I admit that I was reluctant over her color choice, but since it was for her own projects I gave her the freedom to choose whatever color she wanted. Besides, I had no plans of using the paint for any of my projects. Yet, here I am! I must admit that I am now loving the color!

Next I created a stencil for my phrase with my Silhouette, transferred it over to my tray, and painted it in. I used vinyl for my stencil and contact paper as my transfer tape.

I designed a two in one type of phrase: Home Sweet Home and Home is where the heart is. I did use a light pink shade for the phrase. I hadn’t planned on using pink originally but decided on it after I had already painted the tray green. If I thought of it before painting it green, I would have created a stencil in the reverse. Does that make sense? Basically, here I used the void of the cut out as my stencil. The reverse would be to use the actual cut outs. Make sense now?

Eek! My phrase looks white in this picture! Don’t worry, I didn’t change my mind again… it still is pink:D As you can see some paint seeped under the stencil. I need to be extra careful with the next tray.

I did the same stenciling technique for the bird except in a robin’s egg blue. And no paint seeped through! Yay!

For the other two trays I made paper flowers out of scrapbook paper. I had seen this idea over at See Vanessa Craft. Guest blogger Heidi from sew.craft.create had shared a cute wall decor using these flowers. You must check out her wall decor, and she also tells you how to make the flowers. I used my Silhouette to cut out my flowers. I had originally stenciled on doilies, but I wasn’t crazy about how they turned out so I painted over them. I had a few ideas of what I would use instead, but that same day I saw Heidi’s post and loved her idea!  Thanks for the inspiration Heidi!

I’m so loving the green and loving how the trays turned out! What do you think?

And I’m loving how they look on my wall with my vignette! I’ll be sharing my vignette with you in the next post. See you then!

As always, I’ll be hopping over at the linky parties that can be found on my Let’s Party page. Be sure to check them out!

Impressive! Not only are the trays impressive (and for a dollar, really?) BUT the glimpse of your crafting nook/room is also impressive. I am drooling over that sewing machine :)

I think they turned out really cute. Love the spring green, and the saying. I'll have to check out the tutorial on how to make the paper flowers. Look really good. Ive been debaiting on buying a Silhouette, are you really happy with yours? do you use it a lot? I so love the bird. i never go to Target, but will have to soon, everyone seem to be finding great things in the #1 isle. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday's Best.

Isn't it great how happy accidents happen? That green color is so bright, clean and happy. Hard to look at those trays and not be inspired and happy. Absolutely love them. Wow what a bargain getting the trays for $1. Don't know if our target in Grand Junction, CO has sales like that or not. I live out aways from town so don't get into GJ very often. Will sure have to check it out. Thanks or sharing a wonderful project. Love the paper flowers on the trays. Your vignette is very nice.
