If you are a Target addict like I am… and if you have daughters… then you probably have seen this denim jacket…
Cute, isn’t it? I loved the worn out denim look with the polka dots. In general, I just love denim jackets. But there are those occasions that you want the denim jacket look but not necessarily the long sleeves. With Eid falling during the summer season, Suraya’s Eid outfit is one of those occasions.
That should be an easy remedy. So I thought. Sometimes my brain functions pretty slow. This was my thought process… just cut the sleeve and the cuff, then sew back the cuff to the cut end of the newly shortened sleeve. What I forgot to take into consideration is that the upper part of the sleeve is wider than the lower end… which means that the cuff will not fit around the cut end. Doh! Like I said, slowly functioning brain. What I expected to be about a 10 minute task turned into a much, much longer task…
Once my brain started functioning properly, this is what I did… I first took apart the sleeve at the seam, but kept it still attached to the shoulder. I measured it to Suraya’s arm along with the width of the cuff. Next challenge was going to be the sewing part. Since the sleeve was going to be too narrow to fit around the bed of my sewing machine to create the yellow topstitch, I wasn’t going to be able to machine sew the seam. With my sewing machine, I first created the topstitch using the yellow denim thread, and then hand sewed the seam. Lastly, I hand sewed the cuff.
Alright, the big task of the sleeves was finally done! Now for the embellishments. You didn’t expect me to not add some embellishments, now did you? It wouldn’t be an OTI makeover if I didn’t! ;)
I machine sewed lace in two different pinks… one strip on the bottom back and the second on the bottom front on one side.
Lastly, I made three fabric flowers and hand sewed them on one pocket. I embellished one flower center with pearls and another with a crystal button.
Denim jacket makeover complete and a success. Phew! I’d love to hear what you think of the makeover!
